Presentation
Our MSc in Environmental Hazard and Disaster Risk Management (Italian class LM-75) aims to train specialists in analysing and managing the complex relationship between the man and the environment, in the context of sustainable management of natural resources, and planning and coordination of civil protection initiatives.
Activated in the academic year 2006-2007 as a MSc in Environmental Sustainability and Civil Protection, in 2015-16 its title was changed, together with its content and structure, in order to improve professional skills. The course strongly deals with the themes of 'risk', declined in many of its components.
A distinctive feature of this course is the interdisciplinary approach to the study of natural processes, including extreme events and their consequences on socio-economic systems.
Students acquire specific skills in risk assessment (chemical, industrial risk, fire risk and prevention, geological, climatic, biological, ecological risk) and civil protection, both in the field of forecasting, prevention and mitigation of extreme natural events, and in the planning and management of emergencies (disaster risk reduction, GIS tools in environmental and civil protection, integrated emergency management, medicine for major emergencies and disasters), in addition to environmental protection (legislation and environmental monitoring, waste management and environmental remediation, nature conservation and management of protected areas, environmental certifications and regulations, environmental sustainability and renewable energy).
Considering that the lessons are in English, graduates in Environmental Hazard and Disaster Risk Management will also be able to fully use English technical-scientific language in the areas covered by the program.
This aspect represents an important added value, considering the need for graduates working in the field of Environmental Hazard and Disaster Risk Management to interact at an international level with the various stakeholders. Moreover, English lessons are opening our unique Course to international students, providing at world level experts for the management of environmental hazard and disaster risk.
The laboratory and field practices, the other professional activities in environmental monitoring, telecommunication techniques, remote sensing, fire fighting techniques and emergencies at sea, as well as the final dissertation, complete the training, allowing the student to apply theoretical knowledge to either real or simulated situations.
The training path is a continuation of the bachelor degree course in Environmental Sciences and Civil Protection (Italian class L-32) of this university; moreover, it is also open to graduates of other degree classes, interested in extending their knowledge and know-how on the aforementioned issues.
The access to the course is open, subject to the verification of the curricular requirements and, if needed, an interview will assess the adequacy of the preparation.
At the end of the course, the title of Master Degree in Environmental Hazard and Disaster Risk Management is achieved.
The title allows access to Postgraduate Courses and PhD programs.
In particular, at the Polytechnic University of Marche, a doctoral program in Sciences, Civil and Environmental Protection curriculum, has been active for years, which represents the natural follow up for graduates who intend to continue in research and third level university studies.
The possession of the MsC degree in Environmental Hazard and Disaster Risk Management also allows access, after examination and / or training, to the Italian professional registers (DPR 328/2001 and DM 386/2007 annex 2) of biologists, geologists, territorial planners, agronomists and doctors in forestry.

The Master's Degree Course in Environmental Hazard and Disaster Risk Management trains professionals in the field of environmental hazard management, conservation and recovery of the environment, sustainable development, as well as disaster risk management. The graduates of this master's degree course will gain the interdisciplinary scientific, legislative and managerial competencies that allows to deal in an integrated way with problems imposed by environmental degradation and major emergencies; by proposing interventions for preventive monitoring, strategies for emergency management, and solutions for the restoration of altered environment.
In order to achieve these abilities, the master's degree course in Environmental Hazard and Disaster Risk Management includes:
- Training activities aimed at understanding the problems of various types of environmental hazard (geological, climatic, chemical, industrial, fire, biological, ecological).
- Activities aimed at understanding the economic and legislative aspects of environmental monitoring and disaster risk management.
- Theoretical and practical preparation activities in the field of integrated management of major emergencies.
- Activities aimed at acquiring methodologies for environmental remediation and waste management.
- Activities concerning the general and applicative aspects of issues relating to environmental sustainability, also including the study of alternative energy resources and environmental certifications.
- The graduates of this master's degree course will be able to use the English language correctly and fluently, also with reference to disciplinary language; therefore the course is delivered in English.
- An experimental thesis to be carried out either at a laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Marche or at a public body responsible for civil protection or environmental protection activities, or at other Italian or foreign universities.
- External professionalizing activities and training internships in companies, structures, laboratories and both public and private bodies in the sector.
