The research group of Zoology mainly deals with systematic and life history of marine invertebrates, especially Porifera, Cnidaria and Crustacea.
The research activity is also oriented towards the description of reproductive cycles, the interaction with habitats and other organisms, biomineralogy, bioerosion processes and biogeography of species.
Long-term studies about abundance or diversity of benthic organisms are allowing to verify the responses to climate change or others environmental disturbance factors on benthic assemblages.
The study activities include scientific diving based on the following sampling methodologies:
Biological sample collection
artificial panels for recruitment studies
sedimentation traps
photo-video surveys
visual-census
transplantation and environmental recovery techniques
credits: portofinodiversportofino divers
Field activities are complemented with laboratories activities:
comparative morphology (including histology and ultrastructure)
cell cultures (primmorphs)
breeding of species in aquarium for life cycle studies
image analysis
3D image analysis by micro-CT
morphometric analysis
attività subacquea fotorilievo subacqueo
Researchers working in the laboratory have carried out numerous scientific expeditions in Mediterranean, tropical and polar (Antartica) regions.
In progress research projects:
  • Progetto GREEN BUBBLES http://www.greenbubbles.eu/?lang=it
  • Progetto MedReAct (Catalyse action for the recovery of Mediterranean Marine Ecosystems by ensuring a long term, fair and responsible use of Our Common Sea) https://medreact.org/
  • Progetto MERCES (Marine Ecosystem Restoration in Changin European Seas) http://www.merces-project.eu/
  • Progetto Reef ReseArcH (Resistance and resilience of Adriatic mesophotic biogenic habitats to human and climate change threats), funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research https://reefresearch.jimdo.com/
  • Progetto MMMPA 2012 – 2015 - Training Network for Monitoring Mediterranean Marine Protected Areas has received funding from the European Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2013) under Grant Agreement no.: 290056. http://www.mmmpa.eu/
