Our main aim is the development of environmentally friendly processes for the exploitation of wastes and for the remediation of matrices contaminated with metals and organics.
Our approach is highly trans-discipinary, involving know-how in chemical engineering, microbial ecology, marine biology, chemistry and environmental science.

Our research activity is carried out within the Inter University Center High Tech Recycling , a joint research center that links some Italian university departments, and we also cooperate with foreign universities/research centers in Europe and private companies, dealing with waste recycling. |
Waste of electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE), exhaust batteries and other industrial wastes contain base and precious metals at concentration levels comparable (in some cases even higher) with mines. In this context, our research activities are addressed at an urban mining approach, recovering base and precious metals (e.g. zinc, manganese, copper, gold, silver, indium, vanadium, nickel, molybdenum, yttrium) from high tech wastes, through an environmentally friendly approach. |

Marine sediments are often characterized by high contamination with metals and organic compounds, due to anthropic activities. Our research in this field is addressed at the development of sustainable decontamination strategies through a biotechnological approach, for either in situ or ex situ remediation. |
According to international directives dealing with the environmental protection, our research activity in all fields is addressed at the development of environmentally friendly approaches, and the environmental impact of potentially innovative strategies is quantified through the life cycle analysis (LCA) methodology. |

Our scientific production includes a high number of publications in high impact journals, participation to international conferences and five patents |
